The Skinny on Green Smoothies

We've all been there, rushing in the morning, trying to get ready for school or work and your skinny jeans are just too tight for comfort. So you panic and swear by all saints that you will never eat another piece of food in your life...that is, until your stomach starts signaling otherwise. And then you realize, you can't live without food.

Then you must decide, what to eat. If you are like me, easy and convenient will do the trick.

Green Smoothies are easy, light, packed with vitamins and minerals. Vegans swear by them. Vegetarians love them. Even those who eat meat like them. So next time you're in a hurry and want something that is not only good for you, but will be super healthy too, have a green smoothie. Green smoothies cancel out a lot of the sugars that you would have with regular smoothie, and believe me, cutting out the sugar is a great thing! You can even add a protein powder to them to make them more satisfying. You can have them as a morning snack 3 hours after you eat breakfast or right between your lunch and dinner.

Here is my favorite recipe:

8 oz of Almond milk
1 Cup of Spinach
1/2 a spoon of ground flax seed ( its super packed with Omega 3 and 6)
1/2 an apple or a peach

This smoothie is delicious, light and easy to make. Remember, we are what we eat! Motivating you is my motivation!

Nike's Fuel Band....Motivating You to  Keep moving!

Yes!!! Nike did it again! They always manage to surprise the athlete in me. So this nifty little gadget measures the calories that you burn throughout the day, it keeps track of the steps you take, and the most amazing thing is that it lets you set a "fuel goal", yeah I know, its a little confusing, but basically it allows you to set an activity goal that you can eventually surpass. As you may all ready know, one can only build endurance by doing just a little more than we did the last time we exercised. So the Nike Fuel Band lets you see your progress throughout the year, because it sinks with your computer  and you can actually compare your progress day to day, week to week and month to month. As you can see on the image bellow, it shows my progress from January to July. As you can the see my record moth was March, but the rest of the moths are average.

I really like this tool because it serves as a constant reminder to keep moving and it helps me see my progress through out the year. The cost is a little steep ($150.00 USD) but definitely worth the money. However, the Fuel band comes with a year warranty, so it makes it nice to know that if it breaks, Nike will replace it a no cost to you, no questions asked!
**************************************************************

El Nike Fuel Band .... Te Motiva a Mantenerte Activo!

Fitness Goals: Reach them, Evolve, then Set New Ones…

What are you working towards when you spend an hour or two at the gym? Have you thought about what your specific goals are? It is important to know exactly what it is that you are working towards, because you don’t want to waste precious time and energy running around in circles and ending up at the same place at the end of the year.
Exercise should be a progression, an evolution, a forward movement, just like everything else in life. As the end of the year approaches, think about these questions and decide what your fitness objectives are, because nothing else will move you faster towards them, than defining them and then taking the right action towards them.

Seeing results really depends on your specific situation, some people go to the gym wanting to drop 20, 30, 40, 50 pounds, others want to tone every muscle in their body, others just want to maintain their current weight and some just go in without any previous thought of what their objective is.

Please don’t be one of the latter subjects on this list. Get clear! Affirm your objective in a positive, clear, concise manner. Some people write out their goals, others just affirm them to themselves; what ever works for you is fine. Here are some examples of very specific, defined objectives:

“My fitness goal is to fit into my size 2 skinny jeans by February 2011.”

“My objective is to weigh 110 lbs by April 2011.”- This objective is clear, positive, and measurable.

“My goal is to wear a size 0 dress size by April 2011”- this objective is also specific, clear, positive and measurable and it has a deadline.

“My objective is to tone every muscle in my body, therefore commit to lifting weights, at least three times per week and eating healthier foods by February 2011.”

Having a visual picture of what the end result looks like also helps in getting clear about the results you are trying to achieve.
I invite you to look through a health and fitness magazine or celebrities and look at the different body types there are out there. Do you know what you would like your body to look like in the future? We don’t all want to be skinny, model types. Some of us want to have curvy, lean, toned bodies with the right proportions in all the right places if you know what I mean. So it’s important to know what you are working towards.

Once you have reached specific milestones, then make note of them. Celebrate them and evolve. Set new ones. There is a saying that says that in order for something new to be born, something has to die. Let your old objectives die, and breathe new life into the new ones. Because sometimes, not changing your mindset can set you back and keep you in your current situation, no matter how hard you work. Change, evolve, grow, progress and you will start seeing new possibilities. You will get a renewed sense of accomplishment, motivation and growth. Stay active, work hard! Motivating you is my motivation!

Running my First Half Marathon!

Hello Vidaglammers! I turned 32 this year :-) Which, I welcomed with lots of joy, positive energy, Champaign and chocolate thanks to my wonderful friends and family.

So my two good friends Stephanie and Claudia had the awesome idea of running the Long Beach half marathon, which coincided with the weekend of my birthday. At first I was sort of reluctant to join, because as you all know; I’m a big fan of group exercise and I knew I was going to have to tap into a different source of energy to face this challenge, since it requires a lot of individual strength, focus and motivation. Needless to say, I enjoy running but I have never been a dedicated runner, in fact the most miles I had ever tackled on my own prior to the marathon, were 3 to 5 miles 2 to 3 times week as part of my cardio routine. Last year I ran a 5K, which gave me a good idea of the kind of focus it takes to train to run long distance; but 3.2 miles is a long way from 13.2 So I knew that in order to run 13.2 miles I would have to dig deep, and reach for extra strength and motivation to train and prepare.
This was definitely a learning experience. I trained, running indoors and outdoor as well.

I bought the Nike + ipod Sports Kit, which is like having your own personal trainer. It’s a device that syncs with your iphone to keep track of the distance, calories burnt, pace and it syncs with your ipod, preventing the music to skip while you run. It also lets you assign a “power song” to play when you are in “the zone”. I have to say that this gadget was the most useful tool ever. The cost is only $29.00 and it’s sold where ever Nike products are sold. Nike running shoes that have the Nike+ sign on them have a hidden compartment where you can hide the sensor (as you can see in the pictures posted here).

I have to say, I have a new profound respect for marathon runners, as it takes preparation, motivation and lots of determination. I think the most challenging part for me, was really reaching into myself for the energy I needed to keep on moving. Although a race is essentially a group event and the energy is incredibly contagious, you, as a runner are there on your own, running at your own pace. The first 6 miles where a breeze, as I was used to running this distance from the training sessions, but when I reached 10th mile, my energy started to drop. I was very grateful that right around that time my friend Stephanie tapped me in the shoulder and we where able to finish the race together. Overall, I was happy to have finished the race in 2 hours and 2 minutes as I had set a goal to finish in less than 2 hours. At this point, I enjoy running, I think I will eventually run a full marathon, but I know I will have to prepare myself for a HUGE challenge. Keep motivated! Keep active! Challenge yourself! Motivating you is my motivation!

Have a treat!

Here at Vidaglam we are Super-Fans of candy, sweet treats, cup cakes, sweet breads and all the wonderful sugary treats that come with the holidays; which of course, can get us in trouble very quickly if we don't remember to consume in moderation. Moderation is the key, when dealing with sweet temptations!

But before you set aside, choose to ignore or simply eliminate the guilt of reaching for another fun sized Snickers, Butterfingers, M&M's, consider the following: Each fun-sized chocolate bar has about 85 calories each, so it is completely OK to have one or two pieces. It's when we start reaching for one, two, three, four, five, even six pieces, that it becomes a problem. Let's do the math just for fun: If you consume a total of six candy bars during one day, you will have consumed a total of 510 extra calories for that day. Most of us go into the office five times a week, and lets say we practiced this behavior for the next five days, at the end of the week we would have consumed a whopping 2,550 extra calories for the week, that is the equivalent of 1 lb of fat.

Therefore, if your goal is to lose weight, or to maintain your current weight, consider consuming the treats in moderation or simply resolve to do spend an extra 45 minutes on the cardio machine, because as we all know... calories consumed - calories burnt = optimal weight!

Bottom line, practice moderation! Enjoy one or two treats, exercise a little more, drink lots of water and for God's sake stay away from the candy bowl! You'll thank yourself later when its time to get ready for your Christmas Party and you look and feel fabulous! Motivating you is my motivation!

-Comer tu comida despacio y saborear tu comida
-Evitar azucares y harinas refinadas

Desayuno
12 oz de Café
Bagel, pan
Crema de Cacahuate
Crema half & Half

Snack (Entre Comidas)
Manzana (o Uvas, zanahorias, 5 nueces, fresas, Berries, Cherries)

Almuerzo
Pechuga de Pollo
Diet soda
Garden salad (Lechuga/Espinacas, Jitomate, Pepino, Cebolla, Zanahoria)

Burpee

Burpees: Work your entire body and increase your calorie burn with this difficult exercise. Scrunch down to the floor, jump legs out to a plank with your hands on the floor. Immediately jump legs in and jump up. Make it harder by making the jump at the end a tuck jump or make it easier by simply standing straight up before repeating.

Fitness Superstar Profile!

By: Paulina Cisneros

Meet Carolyne, she is a Spanish teacher and the proud mother of two. I will let you guess her age, but let it be no mystery…She is a real life, Fitness Superstar and inspiration! As you embark in this journey of health consciousness and as you make progress in your weigh loss efforts, look around you and find real life role models to help inspire you and motivate you to stay on track. Carolyne is a member at my health club, and I have witnessed first hand, how this momma works out and sets the bar super high when it comes to practicing good form, disciple and consistency. This week Carolyne is sharing with VidaGlam her quick, 10 minute, blood pumping home, office, do anywhere exercise routine for those days when going to the gym just seems impossible.

10 minute, Do-Antime, Anywhere Routine:
By: Carolyne Swaney

No necesitas absolutamente NINGUN equipo. Solo un reloj para medir el tiempo.

We’ve all had that day when going to the gym is just not in the cards. Too busy, too tired, or you just don’t feel like it. This workout is your answer to ANY excuse in the book. I’ve done it in the hallway while the kids are in the bathtub, while dinner is on the stove, or when I couldn’t dedicate the time to drive to the gym, work out, drive home, etc. This quickie can be 10 minutes long or you can repeat the circuit for a 20 or 30 minute workout. The best part? You need absolutely NO equipment. You just need a clock or stopwatch.

INSTRUCCIONES:

DIRECTIONS:
Perform each move for 1 minute. If the move is too difficult in the beginning, or you find that you can’t maintain proper form, complete 25 seconds of the exercise, rest for 10 seconds, then complete 25 seconds more. Do the exercises in the sequence given to work different body parts and keep your whole body firing.

Tricep Pushups: Turn around on your bench and rest hands on the edge. Keep feet together and press down, bending elbows to 90 degree angles.

Bicycle: Work your abdominal muscles with the bicycle. Lay back, raise legs and place your fingers behind your ears. Twist fully to the right, and try to get your left elbow to the outside of your leg. Slowly (take at least two counts) twist to the left. As you twist, bring in the opposite leg, keeping the other leg straight. During the exercise, keep your low back pressed to the floor to ensure that your abs, and not lower back muscles, are doing the work.

Squat Sides: These shuffles keep the focus on outer and inner thighs and torch through calories. Maintain a low, squatted position and step left foot to the left, pushing off that foot, bring it back to center and step right foot to the right. Push off the right foot, bring it back to the center, and repeat. The move should be performed quickly with a straight back, abs pulled tight!

Transverse Lunges: Work the smaller muscles in your butt
with these lunges. Keep toes facing forward, and step back into a lunge, pressing low into the butt muscles of the front leg. Press down, hold for one count, then press up through the front heel. Step back foot out to the side and step back with the other leg to repeat.

Mermaids: This exercise works your entire core, and gets shoulders and back as well. Get in a plank position (push up position) with hands under shoulders. Lift one arm to the ceiling, keeping hips up and turning your body. Thread the upper arm through, and raise again. Complete 25 seconds on one side then switch sides.

How About a Salad?

It may sound boring, but eating two salads a day may exponentially help you lose those extra pounds you so eagerly want to get rid off. The trick here is to combine, healthy leafy greens, good protein, and a light salad dressing. Always ask for the dressing on the side, you would be surprised at the amount of calories you can cut just by ordering your dressing on the side. Good sources of protein are Salmon, Chicken, Turkey, Tuna or Soy. If you live in San Diego let me recommend some of my favorite salad restaurants…
1.-Tender Greens (Point Loma)- They have the best chicken salads; they use only top quality ingredients.

2.-Panera’s Bread (all over)- This is a chain restaurant, but they do very well when it comes to preparing delicious salads. My favorite to order from Panera’s is the Fiji Apple Salad, with a Salmon substitution.

3.-Lotus Café and Juice Bar(Encinitas)- For a more organic salad, you can try the Lotus Café in Encinitas, they have the most amazing, salads prepared with organic ingredients. They also make fresh organic natural juices.

4.-Champaigne French Bakery (Encinitas, Del Mar) – The Parisian salad with candied pecans and dried cranberries is the best here.

5.-InFlux Café (Golden Hill and Little Italy)- The goat salad is by far my favorite. Its prepared with goat cheese (thus the name), candied pecans and a vinaigrette dressing.

So there you have it, if you live in San Diego, these are some of the delicious options you have. Where ever you live, please consider making two of your daily meals a salad, trust me it will make a great impact on your weight loss efforts. Remember is the daily habits that make or break our progress, so keep consistent, exercise, eat well everyday and expect AMAZING results. Motivating you is my Motivation!

Fresh Organic Workout!

Meet Lance, a personal trainer who was kind enough to introduce us to his gym. The cool thing about Lance’s work out space that it is as far away from a conventional gym as one can get. His Zen Boxing/Fresh Organic Work out is takes place the middle of a garden, where he uses organic materials to create a spiritual and natural work-out experience.

Here, Lance uses natural materials like rope, wood, water, candles and other organic materials to give his clients an organic experience.

Through the use of resistance based exercises, meditation and massage therapy Lance encourages the mind, body and spirit connection in his routines.

At the end of a training session he treats his clients to a relaxing soak pool, which mirrors a running stream with pebbles that massage the feet and produce a reflexology kind of experience at the end of the work out. But the fun doesn’t end there; he also included a 6 minute guided meditation and a back massage to stimulate the blood flow through out the body.

His routine is actually very practical and can be done at home.
6 minutos de calentamiento intenso           6 minute intense warm-up

6 minutos de meditación guiada o aromaterapia    6 minute guided meditation or aroma therapy

6 minutos de masaje                                        6 minute back massage

According to Lance is just as important to warm-up and prepare the body and mind for a work out as it is to do a proper cool-down, as well as to quiet the mind.

If you live in the north county or near Encinitas, you can visit Zen Boxing/Fresh Organic Work out at 466 North Highway 101, Encinitas Ca. Diviertete y Muevete!

Hola chicos!

Aerobics                                         123 Cal

Caminata                                        215 Cal

Trampolín                                       77 Cal

Tenis                                              215 Cal

Subir Escaleras                               215 Cal

Bicicleta Estacionaria                      353 Cal

Futbol                                           184 Cal

Pilates                                           61 Cal

Limpieza de Casa                          61 Cal

Natación                                       276 Cal

Correr                                          323 Cal

Baile Casual                                 108 Cal

Kick Boxing                                 276 Cal

Actividad Sexual :)                       9 Cal
